Do You Want to Enter Spelling Bees?

Sameer Mishra made headlines this week when he won the 2008 Scripps National Spelling Bee. In addition to being an incredible speller, Mishra handled the pressure and was described as ‘cool as ice.”

There is no doubt that Mishra was so cool under pressure because he had spent a great amount of time preparing for the spelling bee. The Scripps National Spelling Bee website offers some great training tools in their “Study Zone” for those interested in entering spelling bees or just learning more words and improving their vocabulary.

The Study Zone has many tools, including huge lists of words used in the competition since 1950, ‘Carolyn’s Corner’ — 36 week study course that takes place during the school year, and Merriam-Websters Spellit Website (which rocks!).

Words are powerful and can be used to accomplish great things from writing an important newspaper article that helps people or giving a pre-game speech that motivates a team to do win a championship.

Good luck with your vocabulary and your spelling bee training.
