After its winter hibernation, baseball is upon us once again! Yes, my friends, Opening Day is April 6th and baseball fans across America will celebrate the return of game winning home runs, diving catches, and 95 mile-per-hour fastballs.
Forget the fact that now there is actually an “Opening Night” (The champion Phillies host the Braves the night before), Opening Day is one of the great American traditions. It is not only the beginning of the Major League Baseball season, but it reminds us that every team has a fresh start at reaching the World Series. The old saying “Wait until next year!” turns into “Next year is now!”
Even though there are 162 regular season games, Opening Day represents something special and has become an unofficial national holiday. Adults and kids mysteriously get sick and play hooky from work or school, where they end up at the ballpark to be a part of the festivities. There is an “electricity” that is felt throughout the crowd when the entire team is announced for the first time that year.
A win on Opening Day is taken as a sign that good things are to come for your favorite team this season. Check out the Opening Day schedules at MLB.com and see which teams have the greatest shot at reaching the post-season in 2009.
