Ryan Miller and the Mindset of a Championship Goalie

March 11th, 2010

Ryan Miller won the tournament MVP during the hockey event at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. His play was stellar and

The Wall Street Journal had a recent story by Matthew Futterman highlighting Ryan Miller’s personality and the qualities it takes to play goaltender at such high levels of hockey competition. From the article:

“You have to be absolutely reliable,” Mr. Dryden (a hall of fame NHL Goalie) said. “You have to be disciplined. You have to be responsible. You have to have a lot of understated qualities. You have to decide that there is something more important than you are. You have to be willing to play that way. You can’t grab attention by the lapel and insist on it. You’re going to get it sometimes and not get it other times. The game is going to come to you and you’ve got to be willing to accept that. There are not that many people who are really talented who are willing to accept that.”

The qualities mentioned above are those qualities that can make one a champion no matter what position, sport, or activity they are taking part in. Do you have the mindset of a champion?

If you do or want to develop that attitude, join our free Champions Club for families. It is full of activities and games for those who like to go for the gold. Join Now.

World’s Tallest Dog is Giant George of Arizona

February 23rd, 2010

Wow, that is one big dog! We are talking about Giant George, a 4 year old Great Dane living in Arizona. On Monday it became official as the Guinness Book of World Records named Giant George the World’s Tallest Dog. BTW, Giant George is set to appear on the Oprah Winfrey Show now that he is officially the tallest dog in the world.

You can watch George play with a 100 pound lab in the video below (btw, George weighs 245 pounds!). Someone should make Giant George their team mascot.

Meet the Vancouver Olympic Mascots

February 22nd, 2010

We love sports mascots and the Olympics always brings some good fun with mascots. Check out the three mascots for the 2010 picture-37Vancouver Olympics: Quatchi, Miga, and Sumi.

There are fun videos and games at the official Olympic site. BTW, did you know that Quatchi is a sasquatch that comes from the forests of Canada and he loves to play hockey.

Miga is a young sea bear who loves to surf and snowboard and has landed a corked 720 on the half-pipe in a pre-Olympic run. No word if Miga has been training with Sean White of the USA snowboard team.

Sumi is a mountain spirit who, like many Candians, has a background drawn from many places. Sumi works hard to protect and enjoy the beautiful lands of Canada. When not having fun outdoors, Sumi can be found sipping hot cocoa with friends around the fireplace and sharing stories of fun winter sports in and around the world.

Kids Set Goals for 2010

January 4th, 2010

A lot of players and Champions Club members wrote us about their goals for 2010. Successful teams, leaders, and players have long used goals to get them to their vision of the future. As two sport superstar Bo Jackson once said, “Set your goals high and don’t stop until you get there.”

There are a lot of components to successfully completing a big goal, including planning, practicing, visioning, positive attitude, hard work, resiliency and team work. Here are some of the goals for 2010 that were sent in to us.

Joseph (Team Dino, age 6) — learning to surf on his family vacation in Hawaii

Abigail (Our Team, age 9) — beat her Dad in H-O-R-S-E before next Thanksgiving

Lily (Lily’s Lions, age 10) — make her Jr. High School dance team next Fall

Greg (Giants, age 12) — read all of the Harry Potter books

Alex (SmashMouth, Age 14) — save $3,000 from caddying and yard work for car savings fund

Pierre Garcon or Austin Collie

December 26th, 2009
This post comes from Zach, owner of Grand Theft Football in Dad & Child League 47.  Let’s hear what you all think! Add your comments below.

I’m real impressed by Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie. Although Collie is the 3rd WR, I think Pierre Garcon might be able to take the position because he has the most points. But Peyton likes relying on young kids like Collie, so will Collie keep his position or will Garcon take it from him?

BV Wildcats Are Fantasy Football Team of the Week (15)

December 23rd, 2009

Monstrously huge performance by BV Wildcats (Open League 128) to take home Team of the Week Honors during Week 15 of the 2009 NFL Fantasy Season. BV Wildcats beat Aimees Uninsurables by nearly 5 points with Aaron Rodgers’ (QB-GB) 43.52 points setting the golden standard.

Maurice Jones-Drew (RB-JAC), Jamaal Charles (RB-KC), Chad Ochocinco (WR/TE-CIN) and Dallas Clark (WR/TE-DAL) had great performances and helped BV Wildcats take home first place of all of the teams competing at Family Fantasy Sports. More amazing perhaps is that Ben Roethlisberger (QB-PIT) scored 38.82 points and sat on BV Wildcats’ bench. Check out BV Wildcats starting roster (with calculations) below to see how they took home the victory.

Other teams in the Top 25 for Week 15 include, Ella Bella (Shoom Kirsch League), A Gold (WKFFL), In Your Face (Dad & Child 80), and Water Buffalo (MuncieBadger League)

What an impressive week, not to mention the fact that Ben Roethlisberger is on the bench.

Cincinnati Bengals Beat

December 16th, 2009

Our own Cincinnati Bengals kids sportswriter, Adam, submitted his thoughts on the Bengals-Lions game and his picks from Week 13.  Now we are going to review his analysis and see how well he did!  Our comments are in italics.

By the way, we are looking for more kids sportswriters to cover the NFL and other sports throughout the year.  If you’d like to hop on board the Family Fantasy Sports reporters bandwagon let us know. We are always looking for more writers, so submit your thoughts, comments, picks, articles, editorials, whatever!

OVERALL 10-5
An excellent performance from Adam, proving once again that the Family Fantasy Sports crowd can make the predictions for NFL games just as well (if not better!) than the experts on TV.

Now here are my fantasy picks: I think that Carson Palmer will have a monster game against the Lions defense. Look for the NO defense to stand strong against the Redskins. Check out Steve Slaton, because he’ll run all over the Jags. Chad Ochocinco will be a beast with the arm of Palmer behind him. Matt Stover will make his PAT’s and a field goal against the low-morale TEN defense. I hope you enjoyed my picks.

Since I’m from Cincinnati, I root for the Bengals. When they play the Lions, look for their O-Line to stand strong, and topple the Lions D-Line. Let’s play some football!

Palmer - 15.5 points, decent game

New Orleans DST - 14 points, HUGE game

Slaton - 0 points (injury)

Ochocinc0 -19 points, HUGE game

Stover - 9 points, HUGE game

Adam was pretty much dead-on accurate with his fantasy picks for Week 13.  We think they should add a spot for him on one of the big pregame shows. Anyone at ESPN listening?!
