The Wall Street Journal had a recent story by Matthew Futterman highlighting Ryan Miller’s personality and the qualities it takes to play goaltender at such high levels of hockey competition. From the article:

“You have to be absolutely reliable,” Mr. Dryden (a hall of fame NHL Goalie) said. “You have to be disciplined. You have to be responsible. You have to have a lot of understated qualities. You have to decide that there is something more important than you are. You have to be willing to play that way. You can’t grab attention by the lapel and insist on it. You’re going to get it sometimes and not get it other times. The game is going to come to you and you’ve got to be willing to accept that. There are not that many people who are really talented who are willing to accept that.”

The qualities mentioned above are those qualities that can make one a champion no matter what position, sport, or activity they are taking part in. Do you have the mindset of a champion?

If you do or want to develop that attitude, join our free Champions Club for families. It is full of activities and games for those who like to go for the gold. Join Now.

Learning Strategy with Fantasy Football

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Owning a fantasy football team is fun and is a great way to learn about strategy and negotiation. Today we received a call during our radio show that highlights the lessons to be learned while playing fantasy football.

The caller mentioned that they had been offered a trade today. The caller was offered Maurice Jones-Drew (RB) in exchange for Chad Ochocinco(WR) and Greg Jennings (WR). Obviously every player in fantasy sports values players differently and their decisions on trades will depend on their entire roster and their specific needs. But there is a lot to learn from the trade offer above.

Jones-Drew's big Week 3 increased his value in the trade market

Jones-Drew's big Week 3 increased his value in the trade market

The owner of Jones-Drew was trying to take advantage of the huge week that he just had during Week 3 in order to get a better than normal deal. Jones-Drew is a great player, but his performance during Week 3 more than doubled his average of Week’s 1 & 2.

Ochocinco is averaging about 10 points a week so far and Jennings is averaging about 14.4. Both players are off to slower starts this year.

On the other hand, Jones-Drew is averaging 19.7 per game and performing at a higher level than his past few seasons. So you see how the Jones-Drew owner is trying take advantage and trade a hot player for players that are currently mediocre compared to their traditional values.

This is similar to selling gold when the price is high or trying to sell the rookie baseball card of a player 2nd year player who is breaking records and being compared to Derek Jeter. The trade offer with Jones-Drew highlights how a owners of valuable items can try to take advantage of their improved standing to pick up items that are currently at lower values.

Galileo’s Telescope is 400 Years Old!

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

When Google decides to celebrate something with their logo, its means some smart people think it is important. Today

Happy 400th BDay to Galileo's Telescope!

Happy 400th BDay to Galileo's Telescope!

Google is celebrating the 400th anniversary of Galileo’s telescope. Its amazing how much his innovation has changed the world and how we understand it. From National Geographic’s article Galileo’s Telescope at 400:

Just over 400 years ago, Galileo–then chair of mathematics at Italy’s University of Padua–got word that Dutch glass makers had invented a device that allowed viewers to see very distant objects as if they were nearby.

The mathematician soon acquired a Dutch instrument, and on August 25, 1609, he presented an improved, more powerful telescope of his own design to the senate of the city-state of Venice. The government officials were so impressed with Galileo’s telescope that they rewarded the professor with a higher salary and tenure for life at his university.
