Ryan Miller and the Mindset of a Championship Goalie

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

Ryan Miller won the tournament MVP during the hockey event at the Winter Olympics in Vancouver. His play was stellar and

The Wall Street Journal had a recent story by Matthew Futterman highlighting Ryan Miller’s personality and the qualities it takes to play goaltender at such high levels of hockey competition. From the article:

“You have to be absolutely reliable,” Mr. Dryden (a hall of fame NHL Goalie) said. “You have to be disciplined. You have to be responsible. You have to have a lot of understated qualities. You have to decide that there is something more important than you are. You have to be willing to play that way. You can’t grab attention by the lapel and insist on it. You’re going to get it sometimes and not get it other times. The game is going to come to you and you’ve got to be willing to accept that. There are not that many people who are really talented who are willing to accept that.”

The qualities mentioned above are those qualities that can make one a champion no matter what position, sport, or activity they are taking part in. Do you have the mindset of a champion?

If you do or want to develop that attitude, join our free Champions Club for families. It is full of activities and games for those who like to go for the gold. Join Now.

Winners vs. Losers

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Each week and over the course of the fantasy football season, owners at Family Fantasy Sports are competing with one another to win games, prizes, and championships.

In life, winning is about more than just games or grades, it is about attitude. A winner always approaches life with a positive attitude, gracious and respectful to others. Below is a classic description of the winner’s approach to life. We hope you enjoy it and share it.

The Winner    Is always a part of the answer
The loser        Is always a part of the problem

The Winner    Always has a program
The Loser        Always has an Excuse

The Winner     Says  “Let me do it for you”
The Loser        Says “Thats not my job”

The Winner    Sees an answer for every problem
The Loser        Sees a problem in every answer

The Winner     Sees a green near every sand trap
The Loser        Sees two or three sand traps near every green

The Winner    Says “It may be difficult but it’s possible”
The Loser        Says “It may be possible but it’s too difficult”

When a winner makes a mistake, he says, “I was wrong;”
When a loser makes a mistake, he says, “It wasn’t my fault.”

A winner works harder than a loser and has more time;
A loser is always “too busy” to do what is necessary.

A winner goes through a problem:
A loser goes around it, and never gets past it.

A winner makes commitments;
A loser makes promises.

A winner says, “I’m good, but not as good as I ought to be;”
A loser says, “I’m not as bad as a lot of other people.”

A winner listens;
A loser just waits until it’s his turn to talk.

A winner respects those who are superior to him and tries to learn something from them;
A loser resents those who are superior to him and tries to find chinks in their armor.

A winner feels responsible for more than his job;
A loser says, “I only work here.”

A winner says, “There ought to be a better way to do it;”
A loser says, “That’s the way it’s always been done here.”

The Champions Creed

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

We recently found “The Champions Creed” while preparing pre-season motivation for a local Pop Warner Football Team. We wanted to get our young players ready for a successful season. Please feel free to share with any and all and send us any motivation quotes and thoughts that you use.

Quotes to Keep You Motivated & Having Fun

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Some more great thoughts from champions to help keep you motivated and focused on the challenges and opportunities ahead; whether in fantasy football, school, or sports. These quotes were sent to the participants in our free family fantasy football leagues.

Love what you are doing and enjoy it while you are doing it (yes, even school work). Two-time Olympic Gold Medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee reminds us, “The medals don’t mean anything and the glory doesn’t last. Its all about your happiness. The rewards are going to come, but my happiness is just loving the sport and having fun performing.”

The second quote that we sent out this week comes from Abraham Lincoln, our 16th President. Many people don’t know how many personal and political failures he had before becoming President and saving the United States. Lincoln said, “The path was worn and slippery. My foot slipped from under me, knocking the other out of the way. But I recovered and said to myself, ‘it is a slip and not a fall’.”

BTW, congrats to our Week 7 ‘Team of the Week’ — EaglesFan383 who rode big games from Drew Brees, Ricky Williams, DeSean Jackson, and the Steelers D in order to take home the college savings prize.

The Winners Manual from Ohio State Coach

Sunday, October 11th, 2009

While we cheer for Michigan around here, Ohio State football Coach Jim Tressel is a respected competitor of ours. He has a new book out called The Winners Manual: For the Game of Life.

It is a great new book that can help anyone identify and achieve their goals; whether they are related to school, sports, or any

Tressel's book is full of great quotes and lessons on success.

other area of life.  The book is full of great insights, lessons, and tips that we can all benefit from. The book also offers quotes from great leaders than can inspire any of us.

For example, Tressel quotes legendary UCLA coach John Wooden as saying, “Success is peace of mind which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing that you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.” You can see that the best coaches, players, and leaders define success based on their own expectations and abilities — not what others tell them success is.

This book is well worth reading and sharing with your family, friends, teammates, and classmates.

Words of Wisdom from Some of the Best Athletes

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

Whether you won or lost during Week 4, your fantasy football results email contained quotes from Tiger Woods and Hank Aaron, two of the greatest athletes of all time. Those who lost were offered advice from MLB Hall of Famer Hank Aaron who said, “My motto was always to keep swinging. Whether I was in a slump or feeling badly or having trouble off the field, the only thing to do was to keep swinging.” Great attitude from the greatest home run hitter of all time.

For those fantasy football teams who notched a victory during NFL Week 4, the winning attitude of Tiger Woods was shared. Woods once simply stated, “You can always get better.” Those of us who won this week should remember this as we move forward through the season; the best are always improving.

Victory and Loss Sports Quotes: Week 1 & 2

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Each Tuesday, when team fantasy football results are emailed to owners at Family Fantasy Sports, a motivational sports quote is included in the text. The quote in the victory email is different from the one in the loss email and each week brings new quotes. Below are the quotes from Weeks 1 & 2 of the 2009 NFL Fantasy Football Season.

The wisdom of international soccer star and hero Mia Hamm was shared with the winning teams from Week 1 as they started the season with a victory. “Its more difficult to stay on top than it is to get there,” said Hamm.

The Week 1 sports quote shared with losing teams was from NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka. He was correct when he said,  “Success is never permanent and failure is never final.”

For those losing their game during Week 2, a little bit of the UCLA Championship Mindset via Coach John Wooden was shared:  “Make the present good and the past will take care of itself.”

And finally, for those owners who won their Week 2 game, a little LA Laker Championship Mentality was offered up from our buddy Kobe Bryant: “I’ll do whatever it takes to win games, whether its sitting on the bench waving a towel, handing a cup of water to a teammate, or hitting the game winning shot.”

BTW, wouldn’t Ditka, Hamm, Wooden, and Kobe make a cool “Mount Rushmore”? I think so.
