How to Finish the School Year Strong

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010

Parents, kids, teachers! The school year is almost over, lets stay focused and finish strong. Our friends at the Fatherhood Initiative have some great tips on ending the year the right way: like a Champion. Here’s how parents, teachers, and kids can all get involved. From their email:

Check In. Talk with your child (parent, teacher) about upcoming projects and tests. You may also want to check to see what grades are needed to earn an A, B, or C in any given class.

Set Guidelines and Rewards. Don’t (allow your kids to) join the neighborhood game of tag until (their) homework is finished.  (Rewards can be used when the task at hand is done — from video games and board games to ice cream and pizza)

There are other tips such as doing homework outside as the weather gets nicer — just make sure to stay focused.

Good luck as the school year winds down. We know it can be hard sometime, but the efforts are worth it.

BTW, have you signed up for Champions Club yet? Have fun while being the best you can be!

One Crazed Parent On Little League Season

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

Its that time of the year; new baseball cleats being purchased, mitts worked in, and arms stretched out. Its Little League season and teams are forming. Our friend Crazed Parent has an excellent post on her feelings and behaviors as she watches her son start T-ball this spring. Its truly  great time of year for families across America and around the world. From Crazed Parent.

And I have to make an embarrassing confession. At his game later in the day, he made a move that made me jump out of my seat and yell. And I looked back at the other parents and realized they were all yelling too. The play? He was stuck between third and the plate, a true game of pickle with the gal on third base coming after him. And he hustled his way to the plate and scored a run.

I felt that odd mixture of pride and complete mortification: My kid just did something really cool and scored a run! But oh sweet Jesus,  did I really catapult my body that quickly and far?

Oh yes I did.

I swore to my fellow team parents I would try my hardest to never do it again.

I hope they did not see my fingers crossed behind my back.

So go out there, have fun, and by all means, cheer for your kids and their teammates. You can even cheer for their opponents when they make a great play or show true grit.

Kids Set Goals for 2010

Monday, January 4th, 2010

A lot of players and Champions Club members wrote us about their goals for 2010. Successful teams, leaders, and players have long used goals to get them to their vision of the future. As two sport superstar Bo Jackson once said, “Set your goals high and don’t stop until you get there.”

There are a lot of components to successfully completing a big goal, including planning, practicing, visioning, positive attitude, hard work, resiliency and team work. Here are some of the goals for 2010 that were sent in to us.

Abigail (Our Team, age 9) — beat her Dad in H-O-R-S-E before next Thanksgiving

Lily (Lily’s Lions, age 10) — make her Jr. High School dance team next Fall
